What is Ozone?
Ozone (O₃) is a naturally occurring gas made of three oxygen atoms. It’s formed in the atmosphere during lightning storms or when ultraviolet light interacts with oxygen. That extra oxygen atom is what makes ozone such a powerful cleaner — it’s highly reactive, meaning it readily attaches to other molecules. This unique property allows ozone to break down odor-causing compounds, bacteria, viruses, and mold spores at a molecular level.
The Science Behind Ozone Odor Removal
Most unpleasant smells come from microscopic particles and compounds in the air or on surfaces. Traditional cleaning methods — sprays, air fresheners, or scented candles — only mask these odors temporarily. They don’t address the root cause.
Ozone works differently. When ozone molecules come into contact with odor-causing particles, the extra oxygen atom breaks apart and bonds with those particles. Ozone has a short half-life of about 20–30 minutes, which means every 20 minutes, half of the ozone reverts to oxygen.
