How Ozone Works to Eliminate Odors

If you’ve ever walked into a home and been greeted by the smell of smoke, pets, or musty air, you know how stubborn certain odors can be. They don’t just linger in the air — they seep into carpets, furniture, walls, and even the air ducts. That’s where ozone treatment comes in. But what exactly is ozone, and how does it work to permanently remove odors?

What is Ozone?

Ozone (O₃) is a naturally occurring gas made of three oxygen atoms. It’s formed in the atmosphere during lightning storms or when ultraviolet light interacts with oxygen. That extra oxygen atom is what makes ozone such a powerful cleaner — it’s highly reactive, meaning it readily attaches to other molecules. This unique property allows ozone to break down odor-causing compounds, bacteria, viruses, and mold spores at a molecular level.

The Science Behind Ozone Odor Removal

Most unpleasant smells come from microscopic particles and compounds in the air or on surfaces. Traditional cleaning methods — sprays, air fresheners, or scented candles — only mask these odors temporarily. They don’t address the root cause.

Ozone works differently. When ozone molecules come into contact with odor-causing particles, the extra oxygen atom breaks apart and bonds with those particles. This chemical reaction changes their molecular structure, neutralizing the odor instead of just covering it up. Once ozone has done its job, it naturally reverts back into regular oxygen (O₂), leaving no harmful residue behind.

Why Ozone Reaches Where Other Methods Can’t

One of ozone’s biggest advantages is that it’s a gas. Unlike liquids or surface sprays, ozone can travel into areas that are difficult — or impossible — to reach with traditional cleaning. It flows over and covers carpets, curtains, air ducts, walls, ceilings, and tiny cracks and crevices. That means it doesn’t just clean what you can see; it tackles hidden odor sources throughout your entire home.

The Power of Professional Ozone Treatment

While small, consumer-grade ozone machines exist, they don’t generate enough ozone to eliminate strong, embedded odors. Ozone has a short half-life of about 20–30 minutes, which means every 20 minutes, half of the ozone reverts to oxygen. To effectively and completely remove odors, you need high levels of ozone sustained for many hours — something only professional-grade equipment can achieve.

At BioShock, our custom ozone generators produce six to eight times more ozone than typical small units. We use multiple machines simultaneously, ensuring we get the ozone concentration up high enough to become effective, and we hold it at that level for many hours. This ensures there are enough ozone molecules to eliminate all the odor-causing molecules in your home.

Safety First

Because ozone is so reactive and the concentration levels are very high, people, pets, and plants cannot be inside during treatment. Once the process is complete, we allow time for the ozone to naturally convert back into oxygen, leaving fresh and clean air and surfaces behind – all without chemicals, perfumes, or residues.

Fresh, Clean, and Odor-Free

Whether the cause of the odor is smoke, cooking, mold, or pets, ozone treatment can neutralize the toughest odors at their source. If you’re ready to breathe easier and enjoy a truly fresh home, BioShock has the tools and expertise to get it done right – quickly, efficiently and effectively.
